How to install, fix and find answers
Quick guide to install Chatelain map replacements, fix the most common problems, and answers to the questions I get the most.
Installation
1
Find your Mods folder
Windows
Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\ModsmacOS
Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/ModsIf the folder doesn’t exist, launch the game once and it will be created automatically.
2
Drop the .package file in the folder
Just move the file directly into Mods. No need to unzip or place it inside subfolders.
3
Enable mods in the game
Open Game Options → Other, turn on Enable Custom Content and Mods and Script Mods Allowed, then click Apply.
4
Launch The Sims 4
The new map appears automatically when you visit the world. No setup, no ingame steps.
Updating an existing mod
When a new version is released, delete the old
File names follow
.package first before adding the new one. The game loads only one file per replacement, and keeping both can leave the older version active.File names follow
[mod-slug]-chatelain.package so they’re easy to find in your Mods folder.Troubleshooting
▸The mod doesn’t appear in the game
Confirm that Enable Custom Content and Mods and Script Mods Allowed are both ON in Game Options. Restart the game completely (not just back to main menu). Also check that the
.package file is directly in the Mods folder, not inside a subfolder. The game only scans one level deep.▸The game crashes or behaves strangely after installing
The most common cause is conflict with another map mod. The Sims 4 only allows one map replacement per world at a time. Remove other replacements for the same world and try again. If it still happens, please submit a bug report with a description and your
lastException log.▸Browser says the file is unsafe
Some browsers flag
.package files as unknown because they’re not a standard file type. The file comes directly from Supabase storage with a signed URL, the same file other patrons download. Click Keep or Allow in the browser warning.▸Game version mismatch warnings
Map replacements rarely break with game updates because they don’t touch script logic. If you see a "made for an older version" warning, you can usually ignore it for map mods. If anything looks broken in-game, file a bug report and I’ll check.
▸What is a Last Exception file?
When the game hits an error, it drops a
lastException.txt file in your Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/ folder. Attaching it to a bug report helps me pinpoint conflicts much faster than just a description.FAQs
About the mods
▸Will the mod slow down the game or take a lot of space?
No. Most of my map replacements are around 1 MB and reuse the base game’s geometry, so they don’t add load time or affect performance. You can install several without noticing.
▸Will it delete or break my saves?
No. Map replacements are visual overrides loaded by the game on top of your saves. They don’t modify save files, sims, builds, or progress. You can install, remove and switch between map mods freely.
▸Does it only work on new saves?
No. The new map shows up in any save, new or existing. The next time you visit the world, the replacement is applied automatically.
▸Can I have more than one map replacement at the same time?
Yes, as long as they’re for different worlds. Two replacements for the same world will conflict and one will simply not load. Always remove the old version before installing a new one for the same world.
About the project
▸Will you eventually mod every world?
That’s the plan. I’m working through them progressively. The order depends on what feels exciting to me at the time and what ideas I have, not necessarily by release date or popularity. You can vote for upcoming worlds on the homepage to help me prioritise.
▸How often do you release new mods?
The pace is irregular. Some weeks I’ll ship something new, others I won’t touch the project. I try not to leave too long between releases, but this is a hobby and life happens. The Patreon and the homepage always reflect the latest state.
▸Are gameplay mods coming?
Yes, eventually. They’re much more complex than map replacements and need ongoing maintenance, so I’m taking my time to make sure I have something solid before releasing. No date set.
▸Are the mods always free?
Map replacements are always free for any Patreon login. Future gameplay mods may have paid early access for higher-tier patrons before becoming free, but nothing is locked behind a paywall permanently.
About the site & sharing
▸Why do I need to login with Patreon?
It lets me track downloads honestly (so I know what to make next) and prevents bots from scraping the file links. You don’t need to be a paying member, any Patreon account works.
▸Can I share the download link with friends?
The download link is tied to your login, so a copied URL won’t work for someone else. They’ll be redirected to login first. If you want to recommend a mod, share the public mod page (e.g.
chatelain-sims.cc/maps/sulani) instead.▸Can I reupload the mods elsewhere?
Please don’t. I keep everything in one place so I can update it, fix bugs, and keep version history honest. Reuploads end up out of date and create confusion. If you want to recommend the work, link to the mod page on the site or the Patreon post.
Still stuck?
For technical issues with a specific mod, the bug report form gives me everything I need to debug. For anything else, drop a comment on the mod post or message me on Patreon.
