Why Sims 4 Mods Are Not Showing Up
If your Sims 4 mods are not appearing in-game, the cause is usually a zipped file, the wrong folder, disabled mod settings, or an outdated conflicting version.
If your Sims 4 mods are not showing up, the fix is usually simple: make sure the file is extracted, placed in the correct Mods folder, custom content is enabled in the game settings, and the game has been fully restarted. Most missing-mod problems come from one of those four issues.
Quick checklist
Before doing anything more advanced, check these first:
- The mod is not still inside a
.zipor.rar. - The file is inside
Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/Mods. - Enable Custom Content and Mods is turned on in-game.
- Script Mods Allowed is turned on if the mod includes script files.
- You restarted The Sims 4 completely after installing.
- You do not have two versions of the same mod at once.
If you need the full beginner setup, start with the main install guide.
The mod is still zipped
This is one of the most common causes. The Sims 4 cannot load a mod while it is still sitting inside a compressed archive.
If your download came as .zip, .rar, or .7z, extract it first. What you actually want in the Mods folder is usually a .package file, a .ts4script file, or both.
The mod is in the wrong folder
The correct default folder is:
- Windows:
Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Mods - Mac:
Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/Mods
If you are not sure you have the right location, check the full Mods folder guide.
Custom content is disabled in the game settings
Open The Sims 4 and go to Game Options -> Other.
Make sure these settings are on:
- Enable Custom Content and Mods
- Script Mods Allowed if the mod includes script files
Click Apply Changes and restart the game.
You only returned to the main menu instead of restarting
The Sims 4 usually needs a full restart before it detects newly added mods. Going back to the main menu is often not enough.
Exit the game completely and launch it again.
The file type does not match the mod
Some players expect every mod to behave the same way, but there is a difference between common file types:
.packagefiles are used for most custom content, overrides, and map replacements.ts4scriptfiles are used for script-based mods and often need Script Mods Allowed turned on
If you want the simple version of that difference, read Package vs TS4Script.
You have an old version of the same mod
If two versions of the same mod are in your Mods folder, the older one can block or confuse the new one. This is especially common with visual replacements and map mods.
Delete the previous version before adding the new one. If you are updating a Chatelain map replacement, keeping only one version per world is the safest approach.
The mod is too buried in subfolders
For beginners, the safest approach is to keep new mods directly inside the main Mods folder until you know they work.
Deep folder structures make it harder to spot duplicates, old versions, and extraction mistakes. If a mod is missing, temporarily move it closer to the root Mods folder and test again.
The game patch disabled your mods
After some official Sims 4 updates, the game turns mod settings off automatically. That means your files are still there, but the game stops loading them until you re-enable the settings.
If the problem started right after a patch, turn the settings back on and then restart. We will also publish a more detailed post-patch update guide, because this is common enough to deserve its own article.
The mod conflicts with another mod
If a newly installed mod does not appear, or something else breaks at the same time, a conflict is possible. Two mods that edit the same system may not work together cleanly.
This is especially important for:
- world and map replacements
- UI and gameplay overhauls
- default replacements
- mods that require shared libraries or injectors
If you suspect a conflict, remove the newest mods first and test again in small batches.
The mod requires a pack or dependency you do not have
Some Sims 4 mods only work if you own a specific expansion, game pack, or supporting framework. If the creator says a mod needs a certain pack, missing that requirement can make it appear broken or incomplete.
Always check the creator notes before assuming the install failed.
Quick fix order if you want the fastest answer
If you want the shortest troubleshooting flow, do this in order:
- Extract the file if it is zipped.
- Move it directly into the main
Modsfolder. - Turn mod settings back on.
- Restart the game completely.
- Delete any older version of the same mod.
- Test that one mod by itself.
That sequence fixes most cases.
Chatelain-specific note for map replacements
Chatelain map replacements are simple .package files. If one of our maps is not appearing:
- Confirm the file is in
Mods. - Remove any older replacement for the same world.
- Make sure custom content is enabled.
- Restart The Sims 4.

FAQ
Why is my Sims 4 mod in the folder but not in the game?
Usually because the mod is still zipped, placed in the wrong folder, custom content is disabled, or the game was not fully restarted after installation.
Do I need to turn on Script Mods Allowed for every mod?
No. Only script mods need that setting. Many custom content and map replacement files are regular .package files and only need custom content enabled.
Can two versions of the same mod stop it from working?
Yes. Keeping an old version and a new version together can stop the mod from updating properly or create strange behavior.
Why did my mods disappear after a Sims 4 update?
Because official patches sometimes switch mod settings off automatically. Re-enable them in Game Options -> Other and restart the game.
Do Chatelain map replacements work in existing saves?
Yes. They are visual replacements, so they work in existing saves and new saves alike as long as the file is installed correctly.
